Teaching Assistant

In Reception, Mrs Blanken and Mr Porter are the class teachers, and Miss Baker and Miss Bland are the teaching assistants. We love working in Reception and want your child to become a happy, confident and independent learner. If you have any questions or concerns, please come and see us and we will be more than happy to help!

The Early Years Foundation Stage

In Reception we use the ‘Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage’ for planning and assessment which is followed by all early years settings. During the year, children will be working to meet the Early Learning Goals across the seven areas of learning. These seven areas are as follows:

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

To find out more about each area and how you can support your child’s learning in each area please click on the link: Seven Areas of Learning

The Learning Environment

Play and exploration is a fundamental component to our Reception classes. Children are able to select activities where they can engage with other children, adults or independently. During these activities, children learn through first-hand experiences by actively ‘doing’ as well as through scaffolding and modelling by adults. We have a wide variety of planned and prepared activities by the Reception team as well as allowing time for the children to initiate their own learning. Activities will be planned through 'In the Moment Planning' which is focussed on children's current interests, as well as taking into account their learning styles and stages of development. More information on 'In the Moment Planning' can be found here. We have an outstanding outdoor area where Reception children have constant access to throughout the day. Children are encouraged to develop their self-confidence, resilience and independent towards learning throughout the school year. We have hens in outdoor area, Margaret, Rosie and Harriet. Children care for the hens whilst carrying out a range of daily tasks to look after their basic needs. On Fridays, during our Reception assembly, two children are awarded a box of free range eggs from our happy hens for their 'egg-cellent' learning!

Parents As Partners

We believe in having a good partnership with parents and carers. Together we can help your child to become a happy and successful learner!

You can help your child by:

  • Enjoying books and stories with your child.
  • Encouraging your child to write for different purposes, for example shopping lists and birthday cards.
  • Provide opportunities for counting and look out for numbers within the environment.
  • Regularly talking to them about starting Reception and what to expect.
  • Encouraging independence in relation to dressing, eating lunch and looking after belongings.
