Mrs C. Lafferty
Our Year 1 team consists of Mrs Lafferty and Miss Bate. We are looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and productive year. We hope that you enjoy the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 1 has to offer!
Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. Please don’t hesitate to come and see me after school if you have any questions or queries.
Your child has been given a reading book and planner. Please ensure you read frequently with your child, reading and discussing the text at least three times a week. We really hope that you will help us to improve reading by supporting your child at home. Reading books will be changed twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please can you remind your child to pop it in the basket in the morning if their book needs changing. We will also remind children about this until it becomes a routine. Children will also read with a teacher during weekly Guided Reading sessions and during our daily Phonics session.
Please ensure that you make a note in your child’s planner to show that you have read with your child. There are a number of information and permission pages within the planner. Please ensure that you read through all pages within the first few weeks of school and sign all the relevant sections.
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and should be returned to school on a Wednesday. There will be one piece of Maths and one piece of English work to complete and spellings to learn. We will have a weekly spelling test every Friday. Children will also be bringing home key words to learn. A letter will be sent out to explain more about these words in the next few weeks.
Children will be offered a piece of fruit on a daily basis. There is also the option to purchase a snack from school which consists of toast and juice. Snack is £2.50 per week, or 50p per day. This must be paid using our cashless system ParentPay. If you would like further information about ParentPay please contact the office. If you would like to provide your child with a healthy snack from home please be reminded that we are a NUT FREE school. Anything that contains nuts will be handed back at the end of the day and your child will be offered a piece of fruit instead.
